In short, IF you have health insurance, your health insurer must now offer free of charge – no deductible or copay on your plans’ next renewal date – the following 8 key health services:
- Well-Woman Visits
- Contraceptives and counseling
- Gestational diabetes screening that helps protect pregnant women from one of the most serious pregnancy-related diseases
- HPV DNA testing, for women 30 or older
- STD screening and counseling
- HIV screening
- Breast-feeding support, i.e., counseling and supplies
- Domestic Violence screening and counseling
Btw – a “well-woman” visit is that recommended annual visit with your primary care provider for a general health check, including a breast exam and pelvic exam (i.e., the oh so fun pap smear – yaaaaay lady parts!).
If your doctor is legit you can usually expect the following to occur:
- General physical exam (including breast exam)
- Pelvic exam (pap smear)
- Update of life and work situation
- Update of family health history (any new serious illnesses in your family?)
- Review of your health history
- Update of current medications, herbs, and supplements (bring list)
- Need for medication refills
- Evaluation of need for health screening tests based on age and personal and family history (such as mammogram, test for sexually transmitted diseases, and colon cancer screening)
- Update on immunizations (source: www.washington.edu)
According to the Augusta Chronicle:
Before the law, many health insurance companies did not cover these services or charged copays that discouraged women from getting preventive care or preventing unwanted pregnancies, some experts say.
According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 47 million women are enrolled in health care plans that fall under the new requirements. The only insurers exempt are health plans that have maintained grandfathered status and certain nonprofit religious organizations.
47 MILLION!??! Golly that’s awesome! Me singing: “Obamacare, Obamacare, Obamacare!”
Rachel Maddow provides an excellent quick summary of the provisions that have already gone into effect and highlights key additional measures that are coming:
[Ordinarily a video clip would appear here however wordpress hates me today and will not cooperate and oh yeah I might be a little html challenged. Whateve! Anyway the clip to the video is below]

So this is all well and good right? Like totally marvelously wonderfully delightful right? Yes, if you are a sane human being. However, if you happen to be a rabid Republican who refuses to step into the 21st Century then as far as you’re concerned it is the dawning of Armageddon and the Affordable Care Act’s special focus on prevention as a way to prevent higher medical costs later is pure malarky. Seriously people, it’s 2012, let the crazy go and join us in the modern world.
But no, you can’t join us because that would require you to stop acting like somebody peed in your cereal and actually start working together. HA! So what do you do the night before these awesome health provisions go into effect? YOU decide to put forth yet another proposal to repeal the Affordable Care Act. What is this like the 33rd or 34th time you’ve tried to kill health care reform?
And of course it didn’t stop there. The “destroy Obamacare” proposal was introduced by the Senate Republicans, but the HOUSE Republicans had some nonsense going on as well.
They voted on yet another new federal anti-abortion bill which would be applicable to D.C. In short, they once again introduced legislation that would ban late term abortions in the District of Columbia. And because they are taking notes from the sadists in Iowa, this time they included a provision that would no longer allow victims of RAPE and INCEST to be exempt from a provision outlawing late term abortions.
Please please please keep in mind that late term abortions USUALLY occur because of a threat to the mother’s health OR a severe fetal abnormality has been discovered that was NOT discernible earlier in the pregnancy. What type of fetal abnormality you ask? How about this one – the fetus does not have a brain and will not live once it is outside the womb. Yeah that’s pretty damn tragic for everyone involved. Also consider the fact that most pregnancies that have continued along for this length of time (20 weeks) are WANTED and but for the fact that either the mother’s health or the health of the fetus is compromised an abortion would not be a consideration.
And yet those who claim to care so much about life can’t seem to take these kind of circumstances into consideration. Talk about praying for your enemy…
Anyway, below is the continuation of Maddow’s coverage of the mind-boggling Republican opposition on these issues.
[technical problems – see above – BAH!]
You know what? It’s cool. They can be mad. We scored a major victory by electing President Obama in 2008 and as a result of that victory millions of Americans have access to affordable basic health care services that they did not have access to 4 years ago. And you know what else? We are planning for another victory in the Fall so “run tell dat” homeboy.
Remember ladies, Senate and House Republicans AND the Republican Presidential nominee want to repeal all of these health care measures as well as overturn Roe v. Wade in the fall so you know what you need to do right? That’s right – VOTE WITH YOUR VAGINA!
Yeah I said it. 😉
