We are all Trayvon Martin, Robot Romney is not the answer, Barack Obama is a true leader and I may have a girl crush on Rachel Maddow #WeeklyRecap

As we all know the tragic shooting death of 17 year old Trayvon Martin and the refusal to arrest his killer has consumed the headlines this week and rightly so. As intrusive and annoying as I sometimes find social media, its usefulness in getting the word out about “news that matters” is unparalleled. The proliferation of social media combined with the 24 hour news cycle makes it almost impossible to hide certain abhorrent activities that in another era would have likely been contained to a small group of concerned people. Not anymore. Everyone knows what happened to Trayvon and the vast outpouring of support is the only silver lining in this nightmare.

 Updates re Trayvon Martin:

(1) Sanford Police Chief, Bill Lee, has temporarily stepped down. #Hallelujah

(2) A new state attorney, Angela B. Corey, has been named to replace Norman Wolfinger who was overseeing the matter because his district included Sanford.

(3) President Obama weighed in on the matter this morning, stating:  “”If I had a son, he would look like Trayvon.”

(4) There are protests planned across the country. There was a march in NY Wednesday evening. A massive rally was held in Sanford last night and a march was scheduled in Tallahassee for today. Protests are planned in various cities over the next several days:

(a) Washington D.C. – A rally is scheduled for Saturday, March 24th from 2 to 4pm at Freedom Plaza, 14th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW.
(b) Atlanta – A march to the state capitol is scheduled to take place on Monday, March 26th to protest Georgia’s equivalent of Florida’s “stand your ground” statute.

(b) Los Angeles – A “million hoodie” march is scheduled for Monday, March 26th from 4 to 6pm at City Hall Park (downtown).

(5) The new goal is to get 2 million signatures on the petition so if you haven’t signed yet please do so:  http://www.change.org/petitions/prosecute-the-killer-of-our-son-17-year-old-trayvon-martin

(6) George Zimmerman‘s whereabouts:  He is currently in hiding due to death threats he has received. He chose to carry a loaded semi-automatic weapon. He chose to continue to pursue an unarmed innocent boy even when he was specifically told to not do so. He chose to get out of his SUV and confront Trayvon. These are choices he made. He should face the consequences of his actions. He should be arrested and charged with manslaughter. Period.

Elsewhere in America…

1. Mitt Romney won the Illinois primary. And now folks are FINALLY falling back off of giving Retro Rick headlines. Geez. Again, I get that the 24 hour news cycle must be fed (thanks Ted Turner) but the BS talk for the last few months about the possibility of Santorum becoming the nominee was ALWAYS ridiculous – just like the man himself.

Speaking of ridiculous – let’s delve into Romney’s top advisor, Eric Fehrnstrom, likening Romney’s position on the issues to being as changeable as an “Etch A Sketch”*!! OMG!! This ish is PRICELESS. Thank you, THANK you, THANK YOU!

See, when an anti-Romney person says he’s a flip-flopper or refers to him as a Robot (finger pointing at myself) we are called haters. BUT if it’s a member from your own crew that speaks the truth well then come now – if it walks like a robot, talks like a robot and has the perfect hair and teeth of a robot then umm well gee isn’t it a ROBOT??

Speaking of “speaking the truth” – Robot Romney was not programmed to do so. Pity. All the money that went into building him and the millions more that are being spent to maintain him and he is inherently flawed. Terrible craftsmanship. Obviously not made in America. Perhaps he was made by the moon people Gingrich befriended. #itspossible

ANYway, the point is that Romney lies – A LOT. It is bad enough that he changes his position from moment to moment but to LIE about it, well gee dude, have enough guts to say “yeah I said that and now I’m saying this – deal with it.” People might respect you a little more if you took that approach but nah you wanna be a “sketchy” out of touch lying robot guy because that makes more sense. #stupid

Rachel Maddow so marvelously breaks down several of his lies that it is worth you taking the time to watch all 14 minutes and 37 seconds of the clip. Trust me, you’re gonna need this info if you happen to find yourself in a convo with somebody who thinks this guy should be President. The answer is “No, he should not and this is part of the reason why”:

*Btw – Sales of the ‘Etch A Sketch’ have soared:  “1,556 percent above normal levels on Amazon.com within 24 hours of the gaffe.” Make sure you get yours before November!!!

2. Back to the man of the hour and your soon to be re-elected President – Barack Obama!!!

(a) His campaign raised $45 million in February. Sounds good right? And up to a point it is a good look. The concern is that the other side has a bunch of angry billionaires prepared to spend hundreds of millions on ads and robo-calls repeating the lies that fall so effortlessly from Romney’s mechanical tongue. (I almost said “forked” tongue but thought that might be too much…). The point is we are just getting started and have a long fight ahead of us. Believe me, the Obama campaign ain’t turning down small donations so keep them $5, $10, $20 bills coming!!! Click here to donate.

Obama’s campaign said nearly 350,000 people contributed in February and the average donation was about $59 for the entire election cycle. Nearly 98 percent of the donations were $250 or less. The money was spread among Obama’s campaign, the Democratic Party and two campaign funds.

(b) Reason #3551 why Obama should be re-elected:  At a recent event in Maryland, a deaf student, Stephon Williams, signed to President Obama “I am proud of you” and without missing a beat, President Obama signed back “Thank You.” Robot Mitt might not be programmed to handle such encounters and may have thought the guy was giving him the finger – come on, you were thinking the same thing. #Obama2012

I think people forget that outside of South Beach and Orlando, Florida can be a crazy a*s state. The “Stand Your Ground Law” being a safe haven for vigilantes and criminals is just one example. On Monday, Gov Rick Scott (Republican) signed a law allowing random drug testing of state workers. This is the same Gov who backed a drug testing law for welfare applicants. The drug testing of poor people law is temporarily on hold after being blocked by a federal judge last October. New welcome sign:

“Welcome to Florida, getting a permit to carry a concealed weapon is easy, getting welfare benefits not so much. Have an orange on us!”

1. Whitney Houston – The L.A. County Coroner’s report is available – I don’t care. She’s gone and she’s not coming back. I’m done.

Wait. On second thought, I’ll just tell you – the Coroner ruled her official cause of death as accidental drowning AND then it adds that “there was cocaine present in her system.” So now I have this to say – do you have ANY idea of HOW MANY CELEBRITIES/ARTISTS sniff a little “sumin sumin”?? Calm down, I’m not saying ALL of them partake but I ceased to be surprised by the numbers a few years ago. Ain’t saying its right, just saying it is. And by the way, what’s that phrase?? “Judge not, least ye be judged”? Mm mm, yeah. Tragic? Sure. Let the dead rest in peace? Damn straight.

And btw – the rumors of Bobbi Kristina being engaged to the young man Whitney sort of adopted and helped raise have been shut down. There, happy? Moving on…

2. Another trainwreck reality show coming soon to a tv set near you! VH1 has greenlit “Hollywood Exes”, a reality show about – wait for it – the ex-wives of five celebrities. Sigh. The current cast: Nicole Murphy (Eddie), Sheree Fletcher (Will Smith), Andrea Kelly* (R. Kelly), Mayte Garcia* (Prince) and Jessica Canseco (Jose Canseco). Geeeez.

*(sidebar re Andrea Kelly and Mayte Garcia:  maaaaaaaan the stories THEY must have…Golly Gee Wow!)

3. Kirk Cameron – alright yes, technically he is a former celebrity but I’m throwing him in the mix because I’m not doing a separate section called “Washed up homophobic bitter ex-celebs” – hey is that a reality show? #itcouldbe

Quickly, Cameron let it be known that he did not approve of homosexuality, calling it “destructive” and “unnatural”. The ONLY reason why I am including this “news” is because some of the twitter responses were HIIIIIII-LARIOUS!

(a) “Kirk Cameron says homosexuality is detrimental. My earliest homosexual fantasies were about Kirk Cameron. Ergo, Kirk Cameron is detrimental.” @NickadooLA

(b) “Wish I could go to the 80s & un-buy that Kirk Cameron poster. Loving God but spreading hate has never made sense to me.” @sarahcolonna

(c) “I know Growing Pains was only a tv show, but I have to think both Alan Thicke & Joanna Kerns must feel they failed as parents tonight.” @MrJoshCharles

Pure comedy!

Wednesday night Rachel Maddow (yes I was all up in her ish this week) debuted this clip in her segment called “Best New Thing In The World Today” – umm yeah, I don’t know if I would have called it that but I thought it was cute and it made me smile.

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

AND then it got better. While I was looking for this clip to share with you folks I stumbled upon another clip of what I think is the same family of ducks. Why? Because (a) they are crossing Pennsylvania Ave (ahem where one would find the White House) and (b) well it just looks like them so I say it’s them. Clip 2:

Now with regard to Clip 3, this video was taken in May 2008 when that “other President who shall not be named” was in office so clearly it’s not the same group…BUT WAIT!! Maybe it’s the same Mother duck and this is a new batch of ducklings? OR, maybe this is one of those ducklings all grown up now with ducklings of her own??? Alright I realize I’m getting a “wee bit” carried away with this but I’m having fun and I will repeat the words of Ms. Maddow “Come on! Melt your frozen heart!”

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

In any event, clearly ducks frequent the White House lawn – I kinda wish they could vote. Hey, we’re gonna need all the help we can get in November! 🙂

Enjoy your weekend people.

Thanks for being a nice part of my Friday night in London. Did you see the article in the Guardian about Trayvon? It was deep. I’ll find the link and put it on your Facebook wall.

Hey Drew – glad I could be of assistance and thanks for sharing the link. Powerful:

“The second world war had a civilising influence on Buford Posey, a white man raised in the Deep South during the Depression. “When I was coming up in Mississippi I never knew it was against the law to kill a black man,” he says. “I learned that when I went in the army. I was 17 years old. When they told me I thought they were joking.”
