As reported by the Associated Press…
A gunman wearing a gas mask set off an unknown gas and fired into a crowded movie theater in suburban Denver at a midnight opening of the Batman movie “The Dark Knight Rises,” killing 12 people and injuring at least 50 others, authorities said.
Moviegoers didn’t know what was happening and some thought the attack was part of the show. Then they saw a silhouette of a person in the smoke at the front of the theater near the screen, pointing a gun at the crowd. (Huffpo)
Real gun control laws? Better programs to help families? Is there a solution? I do feel like trying to understand the sick motivations of a diseased mind is an exercise in futility and yet the loss of innocent lives should never be minimized. My thoughts and prayers go out to their loved ones. I can’t even begin to imagine the horror of receiving this kind of news. It is senseless, beyond reason and truly heartbreaking to contemplate.
I also know that I refuse to allow the actions of one person to dictate how I live my life. I will not cower behind a locked door afraid to step out into the world. I’m still planning to go to the movies this weekend – Heaven help anyone who makes a sudden move.
From President Obama:
“As we do when confronted by moments of darkness and challenge, we must now come together as one American family,” Mr. Obama said. “All of us must have the people of Aurora in our thoughts and prayers as they confront the loss of family, friends and neighbors, and we must stand together with them in the challenging hours and days to come.” (NYT)
Be present and be thankful for today as no one is promised tomorrow.
