In honor of Obama’s public support of Gay Marriage AND staying true to Throwback Thursday (a.k.a. Video Thursday a.k.a. Easy Blog Post Thursday a.k.a. – well I think you get it) below are some videos of people who may one day marry whomever they want in any state in America. GO FORTH AND GET THEE WED!
1. Boy George – “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me”
Info: In his first autobiography Take It Like A Man, George mentions his secret relationships with punk rock singer Kirk Brandon and Culture Club drummer Jon Moss. Supposedly “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me” was about Brandon but Brandon denies he ever had a relationship with George. Ooooo #Intrigue!
Umm either I never actually watched this video when I was a shorty or I totally forgot about the blackface. Wow. Ahh the 80s, everybody wanted to make a statement. #goodtimes
2. George Michael – “Freedom”
Info: “In a 2007 interview, Michael admitted that he had hidden the fact he was gay because of worries over what effect it might have on his mother.” Awwww. (Source)
I mean what do YOU think he’s singing about?? Real talk, show of hands how many chicks were head over heels for GM and rocked that cross earring thinking if only you got a chance to meet him he would be yours forever? HA!
He may have been able to get away with this look in the 70s without too many questions but even for the 80s this was doing A LOT.
3. Elton John – “I’m Still Standing”
Info: “John married German recording engineer Renate Blauel on 14 February 1984, in Darling Point, Sydney, with speculation that the marriage was a cover for his homosexuality. John had come out as bisexual in a 1976 interview with Rolling Stone, but after his divorce from Blauel in 1988 he told the magazine that he was “comfortable” being gay.” (Source) And a future Don of the Gay Mafia came forth! Did you see the Will & Grace Episode?? Pure Comedy!
And last but certainly not least…
4. Queen Latifah - “Ladies First”
(yes I kinda have jokes)
Info: Alright alright she hasn’t officially “come out of the closet” but she will be the headline performer at the Long Beach Lesbian & Gay Pride Festival later this month and apparently this is her first time performing at any gay event. Cool. In any event, she shouldn’t be required to make any declarations about her personal life. Do you Ma and everybody else can mind their own damn business.
All Hail The Queen! No pun intended…
